When are you going to write it?

"So when are you going to write it?" she asked. Mothers always know!

I'm a teacher by day, in May 2025 on our May 24 long weekend, I was in the thick of writing report cards, and my phone rang.

It was a couple I had married. They were struggling, and one actually said they were not sure they'd married the right person. Now listen, I’m not a therapist, but I know a little about marriage from my two decades married, and my parents’ three marriages all lasting two decades and counting.

I guided them through it and they left feeling grounded, rekindled and grateful.

Then my phone rang again.

And again.

And a fourth time.

Four couples, four conversations, each of them asking in their own way, the same thing: are we doing this right, and are we going to be okay?

I guided each of them back to their wedding day and what that felt like.

And then, I called my mom and I complained!

I know, absolutely not my finest moment, but those report cards were interrupted, it’s intense, stressful work, and my long weekend had just dissolved. And, somewhere in the middle of me venting, I said: “I wish they would just read the book FIRST, so I could focus on what they actually need.”

And my mom didn't miss a beat:

"So when are you going to write it?"

(🤣 I love that woman SO much!)

I have a lot to say about marriage. I've learned from my own, which has not always been easy. I've learned from officiating hundreds of wedding ceremonies. I've learned from the phone calls that come years later, when the vows are being tested and their love feels buried under everything life has piled on top of it.

So I wrote it.

I wrote the book.

I wrote the Marriage Manual nobody ever gave you.
